Montgomery beats Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi 6-3, 6-3 to end Indian singles bid at WTA Chennai Open
Robin Montgomery defeated wild card Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the WTA 250 Chennai Open at the SDAT Stadium in Nungambakkam on Friday, ending the Indian challenge in singles.
Seventeen-year-old Maaya, the first Indian woman to reach the last eight of a Tour-level event since Sania Mirza in Pattaya City in 2012, produced an eye-catching start by adjusting her positioning to handle Montgomery’s left-handed serve, which averaged above 180 km/h. The match was played under the floodlights on Centre Court before roughly 500 spectators, and Maaya, from Coimbatore, had been landing first serves in the high 170s range in the early stages.
In the opening set Maaya secured an early break in the fifth game when Montgomery, listed at World No. 151, netted a backhand. Maaya was unable to consolidate that lead — she did not hold serve after that point and converted no further service games up to 15-30 in the next sequence, while Montgomery took her first chance to restore parity.
Maaya surrendered the eighth game after committing two double faults and Montgomery, who served out the first set, converted that momentum into a straight-sets victory. Montgomery, 22 and a former world number 95, maintained pressure with her service and shot-making to close out the set 6-3.
The second set saw Montgomery move into control, establishing a double-break advantage at 4-1 before Maaya retrieved one break. Montgomery then held for 5-3 and sealed the match when a crosscourt backhand winner broke Maaya for the third time in the set.
Other quarterfinal results saw top-seeded Indonesian and reigning champion Janice Tjen, ranked World No. 75, come from behind to beat Russian-born Uzbek Polina Kudermetova 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 in a match briefly suspended by a passing shower, while Magda Linette defeated Mai Hontama 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
In doubles, Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale kept an Indian presence in the draw by beating Montgomery and Britain’s Jodie Burrage 7-5, 6-4 to move into the semifinals, whereas Maaya and Shrivalli Bhamidipaty were beaten 3-6, 4-6 by Isabelle Haverlag and Panna Udvardy in their last-eight match.
Montgomery will meet top-seeded and reigning champion Janice Tjen in the semifinals.
