Shams Mulani played a central role as Mumbai began their Ranji Trophy campaign with an innings-and-155-run victory over Chandigarh at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on October 14, 2026.

The 29-year-old left-arm spinner has spent the better part of five years knocking on the doors of the Indian team while piling up wickets, contributing with the bat and recently earning the Player of the Series award in India A’s first-class series against Australia A. A senior India call-up has not arrived, but Mulani emphasised his satisfaction in his domestic role: “I am really proud to be playing for Mumbai, and I enjoy playing. There is a different pressure altogether because of the bench strength we have. You cannot afford to lack anywhere when you are playing for Mumbai,” Mulani said.

Closing in on 300 First Class wickets, Mulani is gradually transitioning from a seasoned domestic professional to a veteran of the circuit. He has continued to contribute with both ball and bat while maintaining a long-term focus on breaking into the national side. His spin partner Tanush Kotian, also an all-rounder, occupies a similar position as they both press their claims through consistent performances.

Mulani acknowledged the natural frustration that follows missed opportunities and credited the backing of his teammates and coaches for keeping him level-headed. “There are times when you feel you should have got a chance on a tour. You might get disappointed somewhere, because that is human nature. But my job is to keep performing for Mumbai. I am proud to do that, and I will continue doing so,” he said.

The left-arm spinner has sought feedback from coaches, including those with India A, on what he needs to do to reach the next level, and he welcomed sharing the bowling workload with Kotian. Mulani said he enjoyed the partnership with Kotian and noted the on-field returns: “Tanush and I enjoy bowling together. Whenever we get an opportunity to bowl together, we end up taking wickets as well,” he said.

"The door has not opened yet, but I am a patient guy. I will keep working hard and putting up performances."
