Mumbai weigh Shreyas Iyer or Suryakumar Yadav for white-ball captaincy amid availability concerns

The selection dilemma follows a June change at the international level: Iyer was appointed India's T20I captain in June, replacing Suryakumar, even though Iyer had not played a T20I since December 2023. Suryakumar had led India to a second successive T20 World Cup title earlier in the year, giving him recent major-tournament success as part of his record.
Suryakumar's captaincy credentials include leading India in 50 completed T20Is and winning 42 of those matches before the change in leadership; his experience with Mumbai also positions him as a natural candidate for domestic white-ball captaincy should he be available.
Iyer also presents a strong case at state level, having captained Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title in 2024-25 when Mumbai beat Madhya Pradesh in the final to claim their second title in the competition, a fact that the MCA notes gives Iyer the stronger claim on paper.
The association has signalled it will consider availability when naming the white-ball skipper. "We have both Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav as the choice for white-ball captaincy, but it depends on their availability," a senior MCA official told PTI.
In red-ball cricket, Mumbai have already settled a leadership change: Siddhesh Lad has replaced Shardul Thakur as Ranji Trophy captain in a move described as intended to manage Thakur's workload and maximise his contribution as a premier red-ball bowler. This will be Mumbai's second consecutive Ranji season under a new captain after Thakur replaced Ajinkya Rahane last season; Rahane retired from all forms of cricket in July and had led Mumbai to their record-extending 42nd Ranji Trophy title in 2023-24.
Lad arrives with strong recent form—he scored 774 runs in eight Ranji matches last season at an average of 77.40, including five centuries and a fifty—and will lead Mumbai into their Ranji Trophy opener against Chandigarh on October 11 in Elite Group D after the side reached the quarter-finals last season.
With the Ranji leadership confirmed, Mumbai's decision on white-ball captaincy will depend on the availability of Iyer and Suryakumar amid their differing international situations, and the MCA has kept both names under consideration pending clarity on those schedules.
