Neeraj Chopra to compete at Lausanne Diamond League (Athletissima) on August 21

Neeraj Chopra, the double Olympic medallist, will return to Diamond League competition at the Lausanne Diamond League (Athletissima) on August 21. The Indian javelin thrower arrives off a Commonwealth Games silver medal and will face one of the season’s strongest fields in Lausanne.
At the recent Commonwealth Games Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won gold with a throw of 89.75m while Chopra took silver with a season-best 85.83m; Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem and Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott produced lower-than-expected performances. Pathirage’s breakthrough this season has been noted as adding another dimension to the rivalry among Chopra, Nadeem and Pathirage, who are due to meet again before the Asian Games. Chopra is continuing his return from an injury-enforced absence following the 2025 World Championships, where he finished eighth, and the Commonwealth Games represented only his second major competition since that layoff, making Lausanne an important test of his recovery.
Chopra has enjoyed previous success at the Lausanne meeting, winning the event in 2022 and 2023 and finishing second in 2024 with a then-season-best effort of 89.49m. Those results form part of his competitive history at Athletissima and set a performance benchmark for the coming weekend.
Organisers have assembled a deep field in the men’s javelin, including athletes capable of throws beyond 90 metres. Chopra commented on Pathirage’s emergence, saying, "He's a good boy. He's a friend of mine. This year he really threw well. It's good he's doing something great for Sri Lanka," referring to the Sri Lankan’s recent form.
At the Commonwealth Games, Nadeem placed ninth with a best of 77.41m. Walcott recorded 82.55m to finish sixth, with his only mark beyond 80m coming on his final attempt.
The men's javelin competition at the Lausanne Diamond League is scheduled for Friday, August 21, with the event listed for 2:22 PM ET. Indian viewers can watch the meeting on Sports18, and live streaming is available through JioCinema in India; World Athletics' Watch Live platform can be consulted for regional streaming options.
Chopra’s participation in the men’s javelin at Athletissima on August 21 will provide a further measure of his form as he progresses through his post-injury comeback.
