Newcastle United 2-1 Hull City in Premier League Matchweek 5 at St. James' Park

Newcastle United beat Hull City 2-1 at St. James’ Park in the Premier League’s Matchweek 5. Joe Willock struck in the third minute and Lewis Hall added a goal in the seventh, with Harvey Barnes providing both assists.

Matthias Jaissle’s Newcastle recovered from their previous setback to secure the victory and end Hull City’s unblemished start to the season. Hull had begun Matchweek 5 unbeaten in four games, recording two wins and two draws prior to this defeat.

Joe Willock opened the scoring in the third minute with a left-footed shot from the middle of the box after his first attempt was blocked. Four minutes later Lewis Hall extended Newcastle’s lead with a low shot into the bottom-right corner on a rapid break.

Harvey Barnes created both early goals, supplying the two assists in the first seven minutes against Hull. By doing so, Barnes became the first Newcastle player to record two assists in a single Premier League game.

Hull’s defence conceded two goals inside the opening seven minutes and were described as having been caught off guard. The Tigers’ defensive coherence was noted as affected by the absence of centre-back Nobel Mendy, who sat out because of a concussion suffered against Chelsea.

Hull tasted their first defeat of the season as their four-game unbeaten run came to an end following the 2-1 loss to Newcastle. Despite Hull’s attempts to mount a comeback, Newcastle held on to their lead to claim the win.

The victory earned Newcastle three points at St. James’ Park. They are seventh in the table.
