Nicolo Tresoldi nets Champions League hat-trick as Club Brugge beat Inter at San Siro; international future undecided

Club Brugge beat Inter Milan 4-3 in the UEFA Champions League 2026-27 league phase at San Siro on Tuesday, with Nicolo Tresoldi scoring a hat-trick that proved decisive in the win. The 22-year-old striker’s performance has intensified interest from national teams and European observers.
Born on August 20, 2004, in Cagliari and raised in Germany, Tresoldi came through Hannover 96’s junior system and made his senior debut in 2022. He signed for Club Brugge in June 2025 on a contract running until 2029 and operates as a centre-forward who mixes attacking runs with technical link-up play. Tresoldi has represented Germany at youth level, including the Under-21s, but remains eligible to play for Italy at senior level.
Tresoldi’s three goals at San Siro made him only the second player to record a Champions League hat-trick against Inter at that ground, joining Gareth Bale in that distinction. The feat carried extra personal significance because Tresoldi had supported AC Milan in his youth, making a hat-trick against Inter’s local rivals particularly notable.
After the match Tresoldi told Sky Sport Italia: “It was incredible, indescribable. I had dreamed so many times of a night like this, but to score three goals and win here at San Siro is beyond words.”
On the question of his international allegiance Tresoldi has said: “I am Italian but also German… and my mom is Argentinian!”.“I will decide at the right moment”. According to reports, Azzurri coach Roberto Mancini sent a scout to the San Siro game, and Mancini had acknowledged in September that he had spoken with the attacker.
Germany remain intent on retaining a forward developed in their youth system, while Italy continue to monitor him; Tresoldi has stated he will not rush a senior decision because he had promised to play for Germany’s Under-21 team at the June European Championship. Tresoldi is currently committed to Germany’s Under-21s, and winning the European Championship is one of his stated objectives.
Tresoldi is described as a contemporary, high-work-rate hybrid centre-forward rather than a conventional static target man. He is noted for a combination of vertical running and technical link-up ability, timing curving runs against high defensive lines, identifying blind spots between centre-backs and exploiting open channels.
Tresoldi’s immediate focus remains on his role with Germany’s Under-21 side and the European Championship, while his senior international selection is still undecided and will be resolved at a later date.
