No Indian players will take part in the SA20 2027 season after all six franchises finalised their squads at an auction held in South Africa on October 7; the tournament is due to return for its fifth season in January 2027. The auction produced full squads for each franchise and left Indian representation absent from the list of selected players.

The auction process shortlisted 156 players from an initial pool of 789 cricketers. The list submitted to the auction included South African players and several overseas stars. A total of 61 overseas players participated in the auction, but none were from India.

Several notable signings were confirmed during the event: Faf du Plessis returned to Joburg Super Kings and Kieron Pollard was also picked by the same franchise. MI Cape Town added Trent Boult, Shimron Hetmyer and Wiaan Mulder to their roster. The auction activity included multiple high-profile moves between the six franchises.

Jason Rowles emerged as the auction's top-priced player; he was bought by JSK for R2.9 million. That purchase made him the most expensive signing on the night. The auction results reshaped squads across all six teams.

The absence of Indian players stems from the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s policy that active Indian cricketers are not allowed to play in overseas franchise leagues while they are still playing international or domestic cricket in India. Indian players can participate in overseas leagues only after retiring from all forms of cricket. That rule has affected SA20 despite the league’s links to Indian cricket through six franchises backed by the IPL.

Dinesh Karthik remains the only Indian to have featured in the tournament; he represented the Paarl Royals in 2025 after retiring from all forms of cricket. With no Indian entrants in the auction list, none of the six franchises selected an Indian cricketer for the 2027 edition.

With squads finalised at the October 7 auction, attention now shifts to the overseas players who will feature in the competition as SA20 prepares to start its fifth season in January 2027.
