NorthEast United defeated Churchill Brothers 2-0 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda in an Indian Super League 2026-27 fixture on 5th November, with goals from Ethyan González and Antonio Moyano.

NorthEast extended their unbeaten run with the victory, while Churchill Brothers remain without a win since their opening-day success over Mumbai City FC on 11th October. The result left NorthEast on the positive side of the table momentum for the moment.

The opening goal arrived in the 17th minute after Churchill captain Kingslee Fernandes misplaced a pass; Alaaeddine Ajaraie intercepted and the Highlanders moved the ball to Jithin on the right, whose cross found Ethyan González, who finished and then pointed skyward in a tribute to the late Jesús de Miguel.

Churchill pressed late but failed to convert chances: in the 88th minute Wayde Lekay’s shot was parried by keeper Gurmeet Singh, a loose rebound fell to Luwang who could not control it, and two minutes into stoppage time Abdul Rabeeh broke forward and delivered a cross for Antonio Moyano to make it 2-0 in the 93rd minute.

Sebastián Gutiérrez featured in most of Churchill’s promising moments, beating Pramveer inside the box in the 11th minute before having a penalty appeal dismissed; earlier, in the 6th minute, he failed to capitalise on Gurmeet’s slow touch after Lekay won the ball, while his long-range effort in the 56th minute lacked power. At the 51st minute Lekay’s heavy touch spoiled a neat Anil Gaonkar pass and a Gutiérrez cross.

Defensively, Churchill have now gone four matches without a clean sheet. After the 2-1 win over Mumbai City on opening night they have since lost three successive league games, conceding four to East Bengal, three to Punjab FC and two to NorthEast here, leaving them with three points from four matches.

NorthEast were not without nervy moments—Gurmeet’s early loose touch nearly gifted Churchill an opener—but Benali’s side recovered from that error, defended in a compact unit when the match stretched from the 79th minute, and Gurmeet’s save to parry Lekay’s 88th-minute shot proved decisive in preserving the lead.

The win moved NorthEast United to the top of the ISL 2026-27 table for now, and Churchill Brothers remain without a league victory since 11th October.
