NorthEast United sign Nikhil Barla on three-year deal ahead of 2026-27 ISL season

NorthEast United FC have completed the signing of Nikhil Barla on a three-year deal ahead of the 2026-27 Indian Super League season, the club announced on Monday. The 23-year-old right wing-back arrives after considering multiple options and prioritising regular game-time.

Barla, a native of Khunti in Jharkhand, is a graduate of the Tata Football Academy and progressed through Jamshedpur FC’s reserve side before Khalid Jamil promoted him to the senior squad. He has represented India at U23 level and made his senior India debut in the Unity Cup 2026 fixture against Zimbabwe in London. Reports noted that several top clubs approached him following Jamshedpur FC’s exit from the ISL.

In the 2025-26 season Barla logged over 1100 minutes across just 13 games. He is capable of operating both as a right back and as a wing-back and is credited in reports with a high work rate and positional versatility.

NorthEast United have aimed to address defensive shortcomings under head coach Juan Pedro Benali, with the team at times struggling to neutralise heavy transitional overloads on the right flank. Fullbacks such as Dinesh Singh were frequently pulled out of position, and Benali’s system relies on highly energetic wingers including Parthib Gogoi and Jithin MS.

The signing was described as a choice for regular playing time rather than maximum financial reward, with Barla reportedly declining financially lucrative offers to join NorthEast United. He is portrayed as an attacking-minded fullback who offers recovery speed, high-line positional flexibility and strong final-third delivery.

Barla is widely regarded in the article as one of the best young Indian talents in the Indian Super League and is expected to be integrated into NorthEast United’s squad as a regular starter. He joins Juan Pedro Benali’s setup on a three-year contract ahead of the 2026-27 ISL campaign.
