One Day Cup group stage heats up as Middlesex secure quarter-final place

With the final round of One Day Cup group-stage fixtures played on Tuesday, Middlesex became the only county certain of a quarter-final spot. They have lost just one of seven matches to date and cannot be caught for a top-three slot in Group B, meaning they will appear in the knockout phase on Friday or Sunday or both.

Middlesex’s most eye-catching victory last week came at Chester-le-Street and was offered as an endorsement for keeping the 50-over format, testing all 22 players and entertaining the crowd. Durham posted 303/7, with the visiting Middlesex side responding under pressure after Emilio Gay retired hurt and Alex Lees compiled a century for Durham. Zafar Gohar was the seventh Middlesex wicket to fall with 30 still required from 16 balls, but Toby Roland-Jones and Henry Brookes cleared the boundary three times between them, two of those sixes struck off Ben Stokes; Hertfordshire’s golf courses will be that little bit less busy as a result.

Yorkshire moved above Durham into contention for second in Group B with a last-over victory at Scarborough. Derbyshire had reached 137 without loss at the halfway stage, setting up what looked like a 300-plus target until Jafer Chohan took two wickets in an over on his List A debut after three weeks on the bench while contracted to the Hundred. Chasing 279, the home side were 57/3 before Sam Whiteman’s 94, supported by James Wharton and George Hill, steered Yorkshire home with a rebuilding innings; Hill, still only 25, was noted in the report as having plenty of experience, and the piece added that "he never seems to get a mention for England, a situation that may change now Joe Root is back as captain."

Worcestershire’s hopes were dented by Glamorgan after a dramatic finish that left them needing to beat Durham today, boost their run rate and get help from elsewhere. Jake Libby’s century had put Worcestershire in position, the visitors requiring 54 off 32 balls with seven wickets down, but Timm van der Gugten—fresh from a maiden century in professional cricket at the age of 35—combined with captain Andy Gorvin at the death; Gorvin edged the last ball through a vacant third man for the boundary that secured the win. Glamorgan remain too far back in the table to qualify themselves, but the successful chase significantly reduced Worcestershire’s margin for error.

Group A remains tightly contested, with any of three from the top eight capable of pressing for knockout places. Leicestershire retained points on the board but were undone by Kent at Beckenham, where Daniel Bell-Drummond’s unbeaten 133 and Matt Parkinson’s 2-27 (both stumped) in 10 overs kept Kent’s hopes alive. Hamza Shaikh’s 93 had anchored the visitors’ innings earlier, with Ben Green’s late 57 pushing Kent to 261/7 and leaving Leicestershire calculating permutations as results and run rates filtered through.

Surrey, one of four teams on 16 points just behind Leicestershire, were thoroughly outplayed at Taunton as Somerset found an unexpected path to the knockouts. The home side struck 46 boundaries, Tom Lammonby recorded a century at the top of the order and Lewis Goldsworthy added to a 152 stand for the second wicket; Archie Vaughan provided 52 off 36 in the lower order, while Jack Leach, in his 15th professional season, returned 3-29 as Surrey’s innings concluded in the 39th over.

Hampshire prevailed in a high-scoring encounter with Sussex, but Sussex’s response included a notable display from Toby Albert, who hit six sixes off six deliveries. Ali Orr and Ben Mayes were together on 225 in the 36th over without a wicket falling at that point, yet Hampshire’s batters still compiled 383/9 off their 50 overs. Charlie Tear scored a century for Sussex and Jack Leaning and Danial Ibrahim contributed substantial knocks, but the visitors finished 52 runs short.

With Middlesex already assured of a place in the knockout phase and several group positions still unsettled, attention now turns to the remaining matches that will determine which counties progress; Worcestershire in particular must defeat Durham today, improve their run rate and rely on favourable results elsewhere to keep their quarter-final hopes alive.
