Overwatch resurgence helps make Blizzard Xbox’s top-performing first-party studio

Blizzard Entertainment emerged as Xbox’s top-performing first-party studio within Microsoft’s Xbox gaming division during fiscal year 2026, a report published on August 10, 2026 said. The report credited strong contributions from Overwatch and Diablo 4 for pushing Blizzard past internal targets.

The account, cited by Window Central and said to be based on internal Microsoft messages, states Blizzard finished FY26 ahead of Microsoft’s internal projections and was labelled a "top-performing studio" inside the Xbox studios division. That outcome came despite a recent period of layoffs and studio restructuring and amid wider pressures the Xbox business faced this year. The report also linked Blizzard’s results to Microsoft’s broader investment in Activision Blizzard and the continued commercial strength of the publisher’s flagship franchises.

Overwatch was singled out for a notable rebound, with the game delivering its strongest quarter since 2022 after a period of weaker player engagement following the launch of Marvel Rivals. The report says recent changes and large updates have helped revive Overwatch’s fortunes and produced strong commercial performance.

Diablo 4 also contributed to Blizzard’s fiscal performance, with the title described as continuing to perform well through FY26. The report attributes that stability to post-launch content, new expansions and ongoing updates that have helped maintain the game’s player base.

According to the report, Blizzard achieved its first back-to-back years of growth since Overwatch launched in 2016, and the studio recorded two consecutive years of revenue growth. Blizzard President Johanna Faries has reportedly described the FY26 result as the company’s "third-best revenue year in history."

The internal messages cited by the report present Blizzard’s FY26 results as evidence that Microsoft’s acquisition and investment in Activision Blizzard are yielding financial benefits for Xbox’s gaming business. The report frames those gains as occurring even as Xbox navigated company-wide changes this year.

Blizzard is expected to disclose additional details about its upcoming work at BlizzCon, with the report noting rumours of a potential new StarCraft shooter alongside updates for existing franchises.
