Oxford United withdraws clothing line after 'United 93' print prompts apology

Oxford United apologised on 18 September 2026 after images from its new Campus Clothing range showed "United 93" printed on the back, a phrase associated with the aircraft hijacked on 11 September 2001. The club has withdrawn the collection from sale.

The club said the number was intended to reference Oxford United's founding year of 1893. Oxford United began in 1893 as an amateur side called Headington and currently plays in League One, the third tier of English football. A film titled United 93, made about the 2001 tragedy, was released in 2006.

In an official statement the club said the Campus Clothing range had been withdrawn and it "sincerely apologised" for the error. The statement added: "It should not have reached the point of sale and we take full responsibility for not undertaking proper due diligence,".

United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killing all 44 people on board after being hijacked on 11 September 2001. The article notes the flight was one of those seized during the attacks on that date.

The broader attacks on 11 September 2001 involved 19 Al Qaeda members hijacking four commercial passenger planes; two were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, resulting in their collapse, and another struck the Pentagon. The fourth plane, United 93, crashed in rural Pennsylvania and was believed to be destined for the US Capitol Building.

The 9/11 attacks killed 2,977 people and injured tens of thousands more.

The club confirmed it has "removed the collection with immediate effect and are reviewing our approval processes to ensure nothing like this happens again."
