Paris St-Germain v Barcelona could prove to be the most exciting fixture of this season's Champions League when the sides meet in match week three on Tuesday, with both teams entering the round as the league phase's top two and PSG ahead on goals scored.

The two clubs are among Europe's highest-scoring sides this term, and met at the same stage last season when PSG won 2-1; Luis Enrique's team went on to lift a second successive Champions League title after beating Barcelona over two legs in the quarter-finals three seasons ago.

French football expert Julien Laurens said: "It will be a fascinating game on Tuesday," and recent scoring data supports the billing — since the start of the 2025 Club World Cup Barcelona and PSG rank second and third respectively for goals scored per match among clubs in Europe's top five leagues, with Barcelona netting 192 times in 68 games (2.82 per match) and PSG scoring 154 in 67 games (2.3 per outing), with only Bayern Munich ahead of both.

Domestically, PSG have dominated French football, winning 12 of the past 14 Ligue 1 titles including the last five, three of those by nine or more points; Barcelona are the defending La Liga champions, having won three of the past four titles and finishing last season eight points clear of Real Madrid.

European silverware in recent seasons has been concentrated: PSG became only the second team in the Champions League era to win back-to-back titles after Real Madrid, and over the past two seasons only Bayern among the big five European leagues can match Barcelona and PSG for back-to-back continental crowns.

On underlying metrics, Barcelona average 2.56 expected goals (xG) per league match since last season and PSG 2.22, with Bayern on 3.06; Barcelona rank second for goals scored and goals per match in that period while PSG are sixth and fifth in those respective categories, and PSG have also played fewer league games than Barcelona, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester City in those comparisons.

PSG's capacity to rotate has been evident: they made eight changes for a 3-1 win over Strasbourg on Saturday after a 4-2 Champions League victory three days earlier, prompting European football journalist Raphael Honigstein to say, "They've earned the right to rest their players." Barcelona's scoring rate has been boosted by new options — in 10 of their 11 matches this season they have scored three or more goals and in six games five or more — and BBC Sport's Spanish football reporter Elizabeth Conway said: "The biggest and most obvious difference is the squad depth that they've added through some brilliant signings in the likes of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi," adding, "They've brought real pace and directness to the attack, and Gabriel Jesus has given them another option up front. It's been pivotal."

At PSG, Spaniard Luis Enrique has close ties to Barcelona and is described in the report as having "won the Champions League as the manager of both clubs." Enrique spent eight years of his playing career at the Camp Nou between 1996 and 2004, managed Barca's B team, was 56 at the time of the piece, led Barcelona from 2014 to 2017 before managing Spain, and as Barcelona head coach he won La Liga twice, the Copa del Rey three times and the 2014-15 Champions League title. Transfers linking the clubs include Ferran Torres, who moved to PSG over the summer after scoring the winning goal for Spain in the World Cup final, and Ousmane Dembele, who also spent time at Barcelona before joining PSG.

Players from both clubs occupy prominent positions in recent Ballon d'Or lists: of the top 14 on the 2025 ballot, eight were current PSG or Barcelona players, with Dembele and team-mate Vitinha finishing first and third and Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal second; of the 30 players listed for the 2026 Ballon d'Or, 13 play for the two clubs, and Yamal, who has eight La Liga goals this season, is named among the favourites. Laurens said: "He's still only 19 and he's still very much developing," adding, "The variety that he has in his game, the dribbling and the skills - just everything that he does is just so, so good now. "You take him out - [it is] still a very, very good team. Let's say you put Adeyemi on the right and Gordon on the left, and Raphinha - it's still a great front three. "But you put Lamine Yamal in there and suddenly it becomes a phenomenal front three."
