Patten and Skupski secure Great Britain’s place in Davis Cup Finals
Great Britain qualified for the Davis Cup Finals on Sunday in London after Henry Patten and Neal Skupski defeated Gonzalo Escobar and Diego Hidalgo, clinching an unassailable 3-0 lead in their qualifying tie against Ecuador at the Copper Box Arena.
Toby Samuel and Arthur Fery had given Britain the opening wins on Saturday in front of a sold-out crowd, setting up the doubles rubber that sealed qualification. Patten and Skupski completed the job with a 6-3 6-4 victory, booking Britain into the 'Final 8' event in Bologna in November. It is the first time Great Britain have reached the knockout stage of the competition since 2023, a milestone Britain’s captain Leon Smith acknowledged: "Three years - it feels like quite a long time," Britain's captain Leon Smith told BBC Sport. "To do it in three straight rubbers is really good and I'm actually delighted for the guys to look forward to something at the end of the year."
Selection challenges had left Smith with an inexperienced squad in London: Jack Draper ended his season early, Jan Choinski and Jacob Fearnley were both unavailable through injury, and Cameron Norrie pulled out on Friday after feeling pain in his arm during a practice session. Those absences increased the importance of strong performances from the players available for the tie against Ecuador, whose singles players were both ranked outside of the world's top 200.
Samuel, on his Davis Cup debut, produced a comeback win after a breakthrough season that lifted him from outside the world top 250 to 95th in the rankings, overcoming Andres Andrade 4-6 6-4 6-1. Fery, making only his second Davis Cup appearance and serving as Britain’s number one, followed with a 7-5 6-0 victory over Alvaro Guillen Meza to give Britain a 2-0 lead after the opening day.
The doubles pairing of world number one Patten and new US Open champion Skupski, who have not paired regularly on the ATP Tour, dominated the Ecuadorians and did not face a single break point en route to their 6-3 6-4 win. Patten reflected on their partnership after the match: "We are good friends off the court, which I think always helps, and we spend time with each other when we are on the tour anyway," Patten told BBC Sport. "[LTA coach] Louis Cayer has created the British system so it's quite easy for Brits to play together - we both have a good idea of what the other player is going to do, where they are going to hit it, where they are going to move to."
Smith placed the qualification in the context of tougher opposition at the Finals and recalled the last time Britain reached the quarter-finals in 2023 when they lost 2-0 to Novak Djokovic's Serbia, with Norrie and Draper both losing their singles matches. He also outlined the challenge posed by possible returnees and top players at the event: "When you get to the Final 8 and you play one of the seeded teams, they are extremely strong," Smith said. "[Italy's Jannik] Sinner could be back playing, [Spain's Carlos] Alcaraz has talked about his commitment to it at the end of the year, but you've got a chance. You try and steal one of the singles, and it goes to the doubles and you've got a good doubles team. "There's a lot of excitement about it, it brings the team together again."
Other qualifying results confirmed several nations for the Finals: Italy qualified automatically as hosts and the Finals will take place in Bologna from 24 to 29 November. The United States were eliminated after a 3-2 defeat by the Czech Republic — Christian Harrison and Austin Krajicek won the American doubles to give the US a 2-1 lead, but Ben Shelton lost to Jakub Mensik and Jiri Lehecka sealed the tie with victory over Learner Tien. South Korea reached the knockout stage for the first time after beating India 3-1, Austria beat Belgium to join them, Canada beat France 3-1, and Germany progressed after Alexander Zverev won both his singles matches in a 3-1 win over Croatia. Spain were 2-0 up against Chile with their tie due to resume at 15:00 BST on Sunday.
Britain’s victory guarantees their place at the Final 8 event in Bologna from 24 to 29 November, confirming their participation in November's Davis Cup Finals.
