Penalty try hands Sale victory over Harlequins at CorpAcq Stadium

Sale Sharks beat Harlequins at CorpAcq Stadium in the Premiership on 11 October 2026 after a 73rd-minute penalty try gave the visitors the lead and the win.
Marcus Smith, who has been capped 53 times by England, had touched down twice in the opening quarter for Harlequins before Sale forced the late decision that decided the match.
Harlequins’ poor start to the Premiership season continued as the defeat was their third successive loss and left them rooted to the foot of the table despite registering their first points of the campaign. Quins had been crushed 48-0 by Gloucester the previous weekend but were more competitive against Sale with Smith involved for the first time this season following a finger injury. Sale, having lost on the opening day at home to Bristol, have responded with back-to-back victories over Saracens and Harlequins.
Quins led 17-14 at half-time after scoring three tries and having two further efforts ruled out by the television match official. Hooker Sam Riley put Harlequins ahead in the third minute following a midfield combination between Marcus Smith and George Furbank, and Smith then finished an approach move from Furbank to extend the lead. Sale struck back when Fijian Elia Canakaivata scored on his first Premiership start and Smith added his second try before scrum-half Gus Warr reduced the deficit just before the interval.
With Sale committing errors early in the second half, Riley was mauled over for Harlequins’ bonus-point try in the 53rd minute. Sale then worked their way back into the contest, Ben Bamber touching down after a break by Nicky Smith and a big line-out steal from Courtney Lawes helped keep the Sharks within striking distance.
A sustained Sale maul carried Quins back around 30 metres and, when Riley pulled the ball down close to the line, referee Christophe Ridley awarded a penalty try and sent the Harlequins hooker to the sin-bin, a decision that came in the 73rd minute and put Sale ahead.
