Placard asking Ryan Rickelton if his mom is single sparks online debate at Newlands

A spectator held up a placard reading "Ryan Rickelton, is your mom single?" at Newlands during Day 3 of the third Test between South Africa and Australia in Cape Town on October 29, 2026, and the image went viral after South African broadcaster SuperSport shared the footage on social media.
The fan, wearing a cap and sunglasses, reacted when the cameras found him by blowing kisses, removing his cap and sunglasses and smiling; commentators also noticed the sign, with one saying, "I'm not sure he's putting his best foot forward, but credit for having a crack, I guess." It was not clear whether Rickelton had directly acknowledged the placard, and the incident prompted discussion online about the limits of fan banter. "Cricket stadiums are places for passionate support, chants and playful exchanges, but spectators should remember that players are people who deserve basic respect, even in high-pressure sporting environments," an X user wrote on Thursday. "Don't know what these jokers think, is it really a joke?" another user wrote.
On the field, Australia resumed Day 3 at 330 for four, holding a one-run lead over South Africa's first-innings total of 329. Josh Inglis and Alex Carey extended their partnership, adding 185 runs together before Simon Harmer broke the stand. Inglis finished with 102 off 135 balls, including 11 fours and two sixes for his second Test century, while Carey made 80 off 168 deliveries.
Simon Harmer finished with four wickets for 104 runs and Australia ultimately reached 429, securing a 100-run first-innings lead. Marco Jansen claimed three wickets for 60 runs, and Kagiso Rabada and Gerald Coetzee also struck during Australia's innings. Australia’s total set a significant cushion ahead of South Africa's second innings.
South Africa lost Aiden Markram and David Bedingham before tea in their second innings, reaching 53 for two and trailing by 47 runs. The three-Test series was level at 1-1 going into the decider, with Australia having won the opener in Durban and South Africa responding with an innings-and-31-run victory in Gqeberha.
The Cape Town match continued as the series decider, with Australia holding a 100-run first-innings lead and South Africa 53 for two in their second innings while the three-Test series remained tied at 1-1.
