PlayGround Games details combat and quest design for Fable reboot

PlayGround Games has outlined new specifics for combat and quest mechanics in its modern reboot of Fable after a combat demo drew a positive reception at the Xbox FanFest in London, the studio revealed in reporting published on October 5, 2026.
The studio says the reboot will remain faithful to the original while updating gameplay for modern audiences, keeping combat approachable for newcomers but adding deeper systems to reward skill and experimentation. Developers told Edge Magazine, as reported by GamesRadar+, that they avoided turning combat into an overly complicated mechanic so players of varying skill levels can enjoy the game. PlayGround Games also described smarter enemy interactions and greater freedom in how players can tackle quests as design priorities.
Attendees at the Xbox FanFest in London responded well to the combat demonstration, and a posted reaction highlighted technical and presentation elements including a locked 60 FPS on consoles, a smooth combat loop, strong visuals and ‘‘great voice acting’’. The same post commented: "It looks like Playground Games is set to deliver yet another rock solid release with ForzaTech."
The studio detailed targeted enemy damage as a new mechanic: players will be able to aim at specific body parts with differing effects. Examples given include shooting an undead enemy in the leg, which kills it but causes it to crawl toward the shooter, and shooting the head, which kills it but leaves it wandering and unable to attack effectively. PlayGround Games said these interactions are intended to introduce more dynamism and creative options in battles.
PlayGround Games cautioned that combat will not solve every problem inside the game’s quests. The developer said many quests will prioritise exploration, puzzle-solving and dialogue choices, and that an updated reputation system will play a role in how those quests unfold.
Associate directors Craig Littler and Will Kennedy were identified by the studio as the spokespeople explaining the team’s design goals during the interview with Edge Magazine, with GamesRadar+ reporting the comments on the studio’s approach to accessibility and complexity in combat.
The studio provided platform and timing information for the release: one line in the report states the game is scheduled for February 23, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC; another line in the same article states the game is scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027.
