PM Modi meets Commonwealth Games medallists, praises their Glasgow performances

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, August 9, 2026, met members of India’s Commonwealth Games medal-winning contingent who had returned from Glasgow and congratulated them for their performances at the multi-sport event. He also shared a short video clip of the interaction on Instagram.

Mr Modi described the meeting as a special occasion. He praised the athletes for making the country proud. He spoke with the medallists and congratulated them for their efforts.

India enjoyed a strong campaign in Glasgow, finishing with 39 medals, including 13 gold. The overall haul was highlighted during the Prime Minister’s interactions with the returning athletes. The multi-sport return was noted in the footage Mr Modi posted on his social account.

India’s boxing contingent registered a notable outcome at the Games, with the country’s pugilists winning a record haul of 10 medals at Glasgow. Seven Indian boxers returned with gold. Those results were singled out among the disciplines that contributed to the overall 39-medal tally.

Boxer Sakshi Chaudhary, who won the gold medal in the women’s 51kg category, met the Prime Minister during the visit. She said: “Our honourable PM sir has welcomed all the medallists from the Commonwealth Games and we are feeling very proud of this. We have really enjoyed meeting him, he is very humble.” Sakshi’s gold was one of the seven boxing golds for India.

While speaking to the medallists, Mr Modi told them: “Jo khelega, woh khiega. Always cheer for Bharat.” The interaction was posted as a short video clip on his Instagram account.
