West Bromwich Albion came from behind to beat Burnley 3-1 at the Hawthorns in a Championship match on 23 August 2026. Isaac Price scored twice and provided the assist for Harry Whitwell’s equaliser as Albion overturned an early setback.

The match produced two goals inside the opening 18 minutes. Callum Styles put the ball into his own net in the eighth minute from Jacob Bruun Larsen’s cross after Albion had complained that Hannibal Mejbri fouled Felix Horn Myhre in the buildup around 70 yards away; Styles made contact to prevent Oliver Sonne getting a chance but the ball hit his left heel and flew into the net. Whitwell levelled on 18 minutes, slotting low to Max Weiss’s left from 12 yards for the 20-year-old’s first league goal for Albion.

Early in the contest Burnley were unsettled by Albion’s wide play as Jimmy-Jay Morgan’s flick-on from Price’s cross created danger and Bashir Humphreys failed to clear. Burnley then went closest to taking a renewed lead when Jacob Bruun Larsen sidefooted against the foot of the post from Marcus Edwards’s searching cross. Those moments left the game finely poised at 1-1 going into the interval.

Albion began the second half on the front foot and Price opened the scoring in the 46th minute. He curled the ball beyond Weiss, who had strayed five yards off his line, into the far corner to put Albion ahead for the first time. That strike arose from a loose ball when Morgan attempted to help back Styles’s cross and Hannibal challenged for possession.

Burnley responded by introducing three substitutes in the 57th minute — Ugo Raghouber, Zeki Amdouni and Dastan Satpayev. Amdouni tested West Brom goalkeeper James O’Leary with a rising, curling effort from 20 yards, but the shot flew straight at the Albion keeper. The changes were intended to alter the pattern of the contest but did not produce a scoring response.

The match was effectively decided from the penalty spot after Humphreys upended Whitwell for a clear penalty. Price converted, firing low to Weiss’s right with the keeper going the wrong way. The spot-kick extended Albion’s lead to 3-1.

Burnley, described as promotion favourites, were without injured star striker Zian Flemming amid intense speculation of a move and failed to match their lofty billing in a disappointing second-half display. Their inability to turn possession into clear scoring opportunities after the break left them unable to claw back the deficit.

The victory was Albion’s third straight win in all competitions and their second league success of the campaign, leaving them on a 100% start to the season and second in the early Championship table behind Millwall on goal difference.
