Prudhomme denies favouring French riders and defends night-time testing

Christian Prudhomme has rejected claims that the Tour de France shows partiality toward French riders and mounted a defence of the night-time drug tests administered during this year’s race. He spoke to media at the start of stage 18 in Voiron, dismissing suggestions of preferential treatment.

Prudhomme, the race director, addressed rising scrutiny around anti-doping procedures after reports of overnight testing attracted attention. He emphasised that the controls carried out during the Tour were necessary and part of established practice. The night-time drug tests have been the subject of wider coverage, including reporting linked to Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard.

At the start of stage 18 in Voiron, Prudhomme confronted accusations that the event had been biased in favour of French competitors and rejected them outright. He argued that the integrity of the race demanded robust measures and that any implication of national preference was unfounded. His comments sought to reassure riders, teams and spectators about the fairness of the sporting environment.

On the specifics of testing, Prudhomme defended the decision to use nocturnal checks during this year’s race, saying they were carried out as part of the anti-doping regime. He repeated that the International Testing Agency (ITA) was responsible for administering those controls and that their protocols were followed. The director framed the measures as consistent with efforts to uphold clean competition across the peloton.

Prudhomme also sought to distance the organisers from operational choices made by the testing authority, underlining that the ITA operates independently of race management. He reiterated that the testing regime did not single out any group of riders. By stressing the separation of duties, he aimed to counter suggestions that organisers influenced who was tested or how tests were conducted.

Prudhomme’s intervention at Voiron was intended to head off further controversy and reaffirm confidence in anti-doping work during the Tour. He maintained that the procedures in place were impartial and necessary to protect the sport’s credibility.
