PSG beaten Aston Villa 2-1 to retain UEFA Super Cup in Salzburg
Paris Saint-Germain retained the UEFA Super Cup with a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa in Salzburg, Austria on August 12, 2026, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doué scoring either side of a Brian Madjo equaliser.
PSG entered the match as back-to-back Champions League winners and Luis Enrique selected a strong XI that included nine starters from the side that won the European Cup. Many members of the PSG squad had only recently returned from the World Cup. The game was refereed by Somalian official Omar Abdulkadir Artan, who was unable to take part in the World Cup after he was denied entry to the United States.
Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring in the 20th minute after PSG broke the initial deadlock of the contest. Villa goalkeeper Marco Bizot had saved from Doué earlier in the move, but Doué laid the ball to Kvaratskhelia just inside the area; the winger slipped past Matty Cash and fired an unstoppable shot into the net.
Brian Madjo, making his Villa debut, levelled on the stroke of halftime after several earlier misses, including two headers off target and a strike that came off the outside of the post. John McGinn floated a ball towards the six-yard box and Madjo, under pressure from Willian Pacho, volleyed the equaliser to the roof of the net; Madjo had been signed from Metz in January but was only cleared to play last week after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld Villa's appeal against a FIFA ruling, and his strike made him the youngest-ever UEFA Super Cup scorer.
Luis Enrique replaced new signing Maghnes Akliouche with Ousmane Dembele at the start of the second half, and Villa had the first opportunity after the break when McGinn's shot from the edge of the area was parried by Matvey Safonov. In the 61st minute Doué raced onto a through ball from Dembele and curled his shot into the far corner; although the offside flag went up, a VAR check awarded the goal.
After Doué's winner Villa had extended periods of possession late in the match but were unable to find a second equaliser as PSG produced a defensive performance to close out the win. PSG join AC Milan and Real Madrid as the only teams to retain the UEFA Super Cup. Luis Enrique collected his 13th trophy since joining PSG in 2023, while Villa boss Unai Emery has now lost all four UEFA Super Cup appearances; PSG had beaten Tottenham Hotspur on penalties to win the competition last year.
"We are always hungry, we want more," Doue told TNT Sports. "After the Champions League final, I said we wanted more. We have ambitions, we're a young team, and we want to win everything again this season." PSG will next defend the French Super Cup when they take on Lens on Sunday (August 16).
