PV Sindhu eliminated in quarter-finals of both events at Hangzhou Asian Games 2022
PV Sindhu was knocked out at the quarter-final stage in both the women’s team and women’s singles competitions at the Hangzhou Asian Games 2022, leaving the tournament without a medal. Her singles campaign ended with a straight-games defeat to China’s He Bingjiao and India’s women’s team bowed out following a 0-3 loss to Thailand.
Sindhu entered Hangzhou having already amassed a high-profile résumé: Olympic silver at Rio 2016, Olympic bronze at Tokyo 2020, the 2019 BWF World Championship title and an Asian Games silver in 2018. She had won gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games but suffered a stress fracture in her left ankle/foot during that tournament, a setback that forced her to miss the World Tour Finals and the World Championships before she returned to competition in January 2023. Her comeback season included several early-round exits and a slip in the world rankings, and she was World No. 15 heading into the Asian Games.
India began the women’s team event with a 3–0 victory over Mongolia, with Sindhu opening the tie by beating Myagmartseren Ganbaatar 21–3, 21–3. In the quarter-final against Thailand Sindhu took the first game against Pornpawee Chochuwong 21–14 but lost the next two 21–15, 21–14, and India ultimately went down 0–3, eliminating their chances of a team medal.
Sindhu’s individual tournament progressed through the early rounds in straight games: she defeated Chinese Taipei’s Hsu Wen-chi 21–10, 21–15 in the Round of 32 and then beat Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani 21–16, 21–16 in the pre-quarterfinal to reach the last eight. Those wins set up the quarter-final meeting with a familiar opponent from previous major tournaments.
In the singles quarter-final Sindhu lost to China’s He Bingjiao 21–16, 21–12, which ended her run in the individual event. The source material notes that Sindhu had beaten Bingjiao in the bronze-medal match at the Tokyo Olympics, but on this occasion Bingjiao prevailed.
India concluded badminton at Hangzhou with three medals: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty won gold in men’s doubles, the men’s team took silver, and HS Prannoy secured bronze in men’s singles; Sindhu was not among the medallists. Her quarter-final exits in both the team and individual draws meant she could not match her 2018 Asian Games silver.
Sindhu left Hangzhou without a medal from the 2022 Asian Games, and she is confirmed to be competing in both individual and team events at the Asian Games 2026.
