Quimcy Dsouza loses teqball semi to Sumaya, will contest women's singles bronze on Sunday

Quimcy Dsouza was beaten by Indonesia’s Sumaya in the women's singles teqball semifinal at the Asian Games on Saturday and will compete for the bronze medal on Sunday.

Dsouza, 24, had already secured a place in the semifinals by topping her group at the Aichi-Nagoya Games, producing a comeback win over Japan’s Yuina Sakamoto (10-12, 12-11, 13-11) and defeating Cambodia’s Koemyean Dy 12-9, 12-7 in group play.

In the semifinal against Sumaya, Dsouza won the opening set 12-7 but was pegged back when Sumaya claimed the second set 12-9 and then closed out the match 12-7 in the decider.

The defeat eliminates Dsouza from gold-medal contention, but she does not have to play an additional repechage match to reach the bronze playoff; losing semifinalists progress directly to the bronze-medal match.

Dsouza’s opponent in the women's singles bronze-medal match will be Cambodia’s Koemyean Dy.

She also has a second medal opportunity in the mixed doubles bronze-medal match alongside Mohamed Anas Imran Beg, giving her two chances to finish her Asian Games debut with a podium result while teqball makes its Asian Games debut.

Dsouza’s first chance at a medal comes at 10:00am on Sunday against Koemyean Dy in the women's singles bronze-medal match, followed by the mixed doubles bronze-medal match with Beg scheduled for 10:30am.
