Bengal strengthened its position in the Ranji Trophy Group-C season-opener at the Bengal Cricket Academy ground in Kalyani on Tuesday, resuming their first innings and leaving Delhi 101 for three at stumps on day three while holding a 189-run lead.

Bengal resumed on 304 for three and compiled 429 all out in 112 overs, finishing with 27 extras to establish the 189-run advantage as they sought an outright win in the opening match of the campaign.

Sudip Gharami and Abishek Porel, the overnight centurions, combined for a long partnership that produced 229 runs and lasted 283 minutes; Gharami made 133 from 235 balls with 19 fours and was dropped off Navdeep Saini in the 84th over before being lbw to Divij Mehra in the next over, while Porel scored 149 from 228 balls (17 fours, one six) before being caught at forward short-leg off Hrithik Shokeen.

Porel added 56 runs with Sumanta Gupta, who contributed a 50 from 62 balls with five fours and was later dismissed in similar fashion by Ayush Badoni; Pradipta Pramanik then fell cheaply, and Bengal’s lower order failed to add substantial runs after lunch.

Ayush Badoni finished with five wickets, removing tail-enders Akash Deep, Mohammed Shami and Mukesh Kumar in the second over after lunch to register his second five-for, having earlier troubled batters by hitting good areas and extracting turn.

Delhi’s reply saw an early setback when Sarthak Ranjan was bowled by Akash (the ball uprooting the middle stump), Yash Dhull was struck on the chest and retired hurt, and the southpaw pair of Sanat Sangwan and Ayush Doseja combined to occupy 23 overs for 36 runs; Mohammed Shami used the crease to test the batters, Mukesh Kumar ended Doseja’s resistance with a delivery that brushed the gloves, and Pradipta Pramanik castled Sangwan after spinning one from the rough.
