Ranji Trophy: Karnataka aim to extend momentum against Assam at Barsapara
Karnataka will seek to carry the momentum from their resounding innings victory over Tripura into their Ranji Trophy match against Assam at the ACA Stadium in Barsapara on Monday.
Karnataka sit fourth in Elite Group B with nine points, one place and two points clear of Assam, who have seven. In R. Smaran’s absence, Shreyas Gopal — the third-highest wicket-taker last season and fresh off a five-for against Tripura — will continue as captain. Karnataka’s batting has been inconsistent: veteran Karun Nair and the younger players have contributed runs, but Mayank Agarwal is yet to register a half-century this season. The team’s middle order has shown stability in recent matches.
K.V. Aneesh, wicketkeeper K.L. Shrijith and Aneeshwar Gautam have formed the backbone of that middle order, with Aneeshwar’s elegance noted in the win over Tripura. Aneesh has been deployed as a floater and has adjusted to that role. Those combinations have been relied upon to steady innings where top-order contributions have varied.
Karnataka’s bowling plans have shifted according to pitch conditions; a three-pacer attack was used against Saurashtra on a true wicket, while a three-pronged spin attack was preferred on the slower surface against Tripura. The spin unit has featured Shreyas Gopal alongside Shikhar Shetty and Rithesh Bhatkal. V. Vyshak has led the pace department when conditions have suited seam bowling.
Supporting pace options have included Abhilash Shetty, Manvanth Kumar and Vidwath Kaverappa, with Manvanth standing out for his contributions. Manvanth has also showcased his batting ability with a scintillating hundred against Saurashtra. Those all-round displays have provided Karnataka with balance across formats of play this season.
Assam will return to home conditions for the match and will seek to use that familiarity to produce a positive result, though the side acknowledges it must exceed expectations to do so. The match is scheduled over four days with no forecast threat of rain.
Play is set to start at 8.30 a.m. each day and finish at 4 p.m. owing to early sunset, with the timing and weather information confirmed for all four days of the fixture.
