Manchester United will be without Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw for their UEFA Champions League league-round match against AS Roma at Old Trafford tonight, manager Michael Carrick confirmed. Carrick said both players missed training on the eve of the fixture and will be unavailable for selection.

Carrick warned he faces a selection headache because of injuries, revealing that Shaw remains sidelined with an issue that has kept him out of the last five games. The manager said Rashford has been ruled out with a thigh and hip injury, and reported that Patrick Dorgu returned to training for the first time since suffering a hamstring injury.

On the squad’s fitness, Carrick said: "Luke definitely won’t be around this week and fit at that point. Marcus, we’ll just have to see day by day how he keeps improving," said Carrick. The two absences leave Carrick short of options on the left flank and in attack for the Old Trafford fixture.

Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Chelsea extended United’s winless sequence to nine matches in all competitions, the club’s worst run since 1988, and the manager is operating under considerable pressure. That poor run of results increases scrutiny on team selection and tactics for the Champions League meeting with Roma.

United have not recorded a victory since their previous Champions League home game, a 4-0 triumph over Sabah 53 days ago, and are hoping to pick up their first win across all competitions. The injuries to Rashford and Shaw further reduce available options as Carrick looks to end the run.

With both players confirmed unavailable, Carrick must adjust his matchday squad and lineup for the Old Trafford game. On Tuesday, United will try to end their winless run at home against Roma.
