Rayo Vallecano v Athletic Bilbao abandoned after paper-plane protest

Rayo Vallecano’s LaLiga fixture against Athletic Bilbao was abandoned on Saturday after home supporters threw paper planes and rubber balls on to the pitch, with the referee calling off the match following a 15-minute suspension and restart while the score remained 0-0.
The disruption began around the 13th minute when fans chanted for club president Raul Martin Presa to leave and began throwing objects on to the playing surface, prompting stewards to halt play while debris was cleared and the stadium announcer appealed for calm; the protest resumed after the restart and the referee abandoned the contest.
A video shared on social media captured the stoppage, with Ligas Top del Ftbol posting: "SUSPENDIDO el duelo entre Rayo Vallecano y Athletic Club Los hinchas del Rayo estaban inundando el campo de juego con AVIONES DE PAPEL en modo de protesta https://t.co/LdFKlWrOMv— Ligas Top del Ftbol (@LigasTopFutbol) October 10, 2026"
The scenes came amid mounting frustration over the club’s management and its facilities after Rayo’s Estadio de Vallecas was temporarily closed following an audit that raised health and safety concerns, including a potential risk of Legionnaires’ disease, and supporters have increasingly blamed Presa for those problems.
Players had previously raised issues about the pitch and the training ground, while reports of inadequate cleaning and a lack of hot water at club facilities were cited by supporters; fans have also faced long queues at the ticket office, with Rayo reportedly the only club in Spain’s top flight without a ticketing website.
Unrest around the club has already affected matchday arrangements this season: Rayo were forced to move their first three home fixtures to Leganes, delaying their return to their own stadium, and Presa has accused regional authorities of targeting the club amid supporters’ demands for improvements.
Athletic Bilbao said it would contact supporters who travelled to the match to arrange refunds following the abandonment, and the incident is expected to increase scrutiny of Rayo’s ongoing problems.
The controversy follows Rayo’s run to the UEFA Conference League final, where they lost 1-0 to Crystal Palace, and comes during a domestic campaign in which the Madrid side sit 13th in LaLiga after recording two wins in their first seven matches; the immediate focus will be on the consequences of the disruption and whether the fixture can be rescheduled.
