RFU delays start of England’s community rugby season to week commencing 21 September

The Rugby Football Union said on 14 August 2026 that England’s community rugby season will begin in the week commencing Monday, 21 September after a postponement prompted by drought conditions across much of the country. The RFU said the decision pushes the planned start back from its original timing because of concerns over player welfare and pitch safety.

Seventy-one point three percent of England is now in drought, the RFU reported, and the country recorded its driest July since records began in 1836. In recent weeks the union has reminded members of existing guidance on managing rugby pitches during drought and of the need to carry out risk assessments to determine whether surfaces are safe. Many grounds are currently judged unsuitable for safe full-contact activity. No lengthy spells of rain were forecast ahead of the scheduled start on Saturday, 5 September.

The RFU has advised clubs, schools and colleges on how to manage pitches in drought conditions and on steps to mitigate injury risk. The guidance specifically addresses carrying out risk assessments to see if pitches are safe to use. "Player welfare and readiness have been central to our thinking throughout, alongside our desire to give the season the best possible opportunity to begin on a fair and consistent footing across the country," said RFU president Sir Bill Beaumont.

The union sought input from representatives across different regions and discussed available options with stakeholders before announcing the change. That engagement informed the timing of the decision, the RFU said.

"We know this decision will be disappointing for the clubs, schools and colleges, players, volunteers and fans looking forward to the start of the season, and we do not underestimate the impact it will have across the game," said RFU president Sir Bill Beaumont.
