Rishabh Pant rises into top 10 of ICC Test batting rankings; Yashasvi Jaiswal slips to 11
Rishabh Pant has overtaken Shubman Gill in the latest ICC men's Test batting rankings updated by the International Cricket Council on Wednesday, August 26, with Pant rising six places into the top 10 to reach the seventh spot while Shubman Gill retained his No. 7 position; Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped out of the top 10 to No. 11.
Pant is now the highest-ranked Indian batter in Test cricket after being rewarded for a strong start to India’s Test series in Sri Lanka, where he scored 39 in the first innings and 66 in India’s 165-run win in Galle. He has amassed 249 runs in 2026, including three fifties in three Tests. Only Devdutt Padikkal has more Test runs for India this year, with 328 in just three innings, and Padikkal scored a hundred in each of the two Tests in Sri Lanka after receiving opportunities following Sai Sudharsan’s injury.
Yashasvi Jaiswal slipped two places to No. 11 after a quiet run in red-ball cricket and remains without a fifty in Tests this year. The left-handed opener missed a chance to score big against Afghanistan in the one-off Test at New Chandigarh in June and then failed twice in the series opener against Sri Lanka in Galle.
No other Indian batter occupies a position inside the top 25 of the Test rankings, which are led by England’s Harry Brook. Devdutt Padikkal has entered the batting charts and is now inside the top 50 after his century in the opening Test in Galle.
KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja sit at 30th and 29th in the batting list respectively, while Jadeja remains at the top of the ICC men’s Test all-rounders rankings. England’s Joe Root holds second place in the batting standings, with Steve Smith, Travis Head and South Africa’s Temba Bavuma completing the top five.
Pakistan captain Babar Azam, who missed the first Test in England because of injury, is at the 10th spot in the batting rankings following England’s innings-and-103-run victory over Pakistan in the series opener; the update noted he was at risk of falling further if conditions in England prove difficult.
Devdutt Padikkal is expected to move higher in forthcoming updates, because the points from the hundred he scored in the first innings of the second Test were not included in this latest ranking release.
