Rishabh Pant produced mixed scores across his last five Test innings, spanning India’s two-match home series against South Africa in November 2025, his Test captaincy debut in Guwahati in 2025, the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Mullanpur in June 2026, and the ongoing Galle Test against Sri Lanka. His recent sequence of innings has been described as not up to the mark.

Pant, 28, has been a regular in India’s Test side and contributed during the first two editions of the ICC World Test Championship when India reached the finals; he is the second-highest scorer for India in the WTC. In his Test career to date he has scored 2,819 runs in 41 Tests at an average of 41.45 and a strike rate of 74.16, with six hundreds and 16 half-centuries, and he has been part of several Test victories including the Gabba win.

India were whitewashed in the two-match home Test series against South Africa in November 2025, losing the opening match by 30 runs while chasing 123 in the fourth innings. In that first game Pant made a quick 24-ball 27 in India’s first innings but managed only 2 off 21 balls in the chase as India were dismissed for 90.

Pant’s Test captaincy debut came against South Africa in Guwahati in 2025 and coincided with India’s largest defeat margin. South Africa posted 489 in their first innings, India were all out for 201 with Pant contributing 7 off 8 balls, leaving a deficit of 288; South Africa declared their second innings at 260/5, setting a target of 548, and India were bowled out for 140 to lose by 408. In that match Pant was dismissed for 13 off 16 when India were 5/58, and he finished the series with 49 runs at an average of 12.25.

Pant returned for the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Mullanpur in June 2026, a match India won by an innings and 300 runs. India batted once, declaring at 564/8, and bowled Afghanistan out for 152 and 112; Pant scored 81 off 121 balls, hitting six fours and three sixes in that innings.

Against Sri Lanka in the ongoing Galle Test Pant added a useful contribution in the first innings, making 39 off 62 balls with four fours and one six. He combined with Devdutt Padikkal in a 71-run partnership as India reached 462 on a wicket described as difficult.

Pant also holds the record for the most sixes in Test cricket by an Indian batter, a statistic noted alongside his recent sequence of innings in these Tests.
