Rocky Flintoff scores 22 as Lancashire exit One-Day Cup at Old Trafford; attention grows after maiden senior century
Rocky Flintoff scored 22 as Lancashire were beaten by Durham in the One-Day Cup knockout stage at Old Trafford on Friday, after the 18-year-old had produced a headline-grabbing first senior century on Tuesday.
Flintoff finished the One-Day Cup with eight matches, 315 runs and an average of 63, and has attracted attention in part because his father is former England all-rounder Andrew 'Freddie' Flintoff. Croft said of the Somerset hundred: "That first hundred for him [against Somerset] is massive," and added, "To get his first one... I won't say out of the way... but now he knows he can do it at this level. "The next for him is to do it at first-class level. He is a very fast learner." Croft also assessed Flintoff's current position, saying, "He has put himself in a great position," and, "The way he is striking the ball. He has stuck to what he is good at."
Flintoff remains an all-rounder by background but has not bowled his lively seam in a competitive match since his Under-16 days because of bone stress issues in his back and pelvis; the report notes there is "careful quiet hope" that could change by next summer if he comes through the remainder of this season and the winter injury-free.
