Rohit Sharma and Tilak Varma have emerged as the leading candidates to captain the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2027, according to reports, with the franchise yet to confirm a skipper and Hardik Pandya’s future remaining uncertain.

The five-time champions endured a disappointing IPL 2026, finishing ninth in the points table after winning only four of their 14 league matches, and have made changes to their coaching staff with Kieron Pollard taking over as head coach from Mahela Jayawardene as they plan for the next season.

As per the PTI reports, Rohit Sharma remains a strong option because of his experience and success as Mumbai Indians captain; he led the franchise to five IPL titles. Rohit will turn 40 during the tournament, and the upcoming IPL could be his final season as a Mumbai Indians player, with the franchise reportedly able to view him as a short-term option to guide the team before making a long-term leadership decision.

He has also been used as an Impact Player in recent seasons. If Rohit returns as captain, MI could have more flexibility when deciding how to use their substitutes during matches.

Tilak Varma, a left-handed batter and an important member of the Mumbai Indians squad, is India’s T20I vice-captain and is being considered as another strong contender for the role. MI could consider handing Tilak the captaincy to prepare him for a longer leadership role, and he could benefit from Rohit’s experience if the franchise opts to use the former captain as a mentor during any transition.

The franchise has not officially announced its captain for IPL 2027 and will need to resolve leadership and team-combination decisions ahead of the upcoming campaign.
