Rohit Sharma poised to resume Mumbai Indians captaincy for IPL 2027 with announcement due mid-November

Rohit Sharma is reportedly set to return as captain of the Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2027 season, with the franchise expected to make an official announcement between November 16 and 18, cricket journalist Rahul Rawat reported on November 7.
Rohit was replaced by Hardik Pandya ahead of IPL 2024 and has not held the MI captaincy since, but he remains the franchise’s most successful captain, having led Mumbai to five IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. An earlier report by The Indian Express said Rohit had agreed to reassume the role after discussions with the franchise, though Mumbai Indians have yet to confirm their captain for 2027.
Hardik Pandya took over the Mumbai captaincy in 2024 after returning to the franchise from Gujarat Titans, a move that generated considerable debate among fans because of Rohit’s record with the team. The decision to change leadership has been a recurring topic as the franchise evaluated its direction following mixed results.
On-field outcomes under Hardik have been uneven: Mumbai finished at the bottom of the points table in IPL 2024, recovered to reach the playoffs in 2025, and then struggled in 2026, ending ninth after managing only four wins in 14 league matches. Those results have been cited in media coverage as a factor driving speculation about another leadership change ahead of 2027.
Reports on November 7 also linked Hardik’s future with a possible trade, naming Punjab Kings pacer Arshdeep Singh as part of a proposed swap. India Today reported the proposed exchange was close to completion, with Hardik potentially moving to Punjab Kings and Arshdeep Singh joining Mumbai Indians, and that official confirmation could follow once formalities were completed.
Rohit’s potential reinstatement has become the predominant talking point around Mumbai Indians’ preparations for IPL 2027, and it would restore the captain who oversaw the franchise’s most successful period in the competition.
Mumbai Indians are expected to make the formal announcement on their captaincy between November 16 and 18, which would clarify leadership plans ahead of the 2027 IPL season.
