Rohit Sharma says his career is not finished as he eyes 2027 World Cup
Rohit Sharma told JioHotstar on September 26, 2026, that the thought of his career being finished never crosses his mind as he prepares for India's ODI series against the West Indies. He said he is looking forward to the 2027 World Cup and what lies ahead for him.
Rohit is currently only active in ODI cricket after having called time on his Test and T20I careers, and the next 50-over World Cup is scheduled to run from October 4 to November 21, 2027, with South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia set to host. By the time that tournament begins, Rohit will be 40 years old, a fact that has fuelled recent debate about his long-term role in India’s ODI plans. Reports have suggested selectors could consider a change at the top as preparations for the 2027 event continue, prompting a board review that produced a public response.
Addressing his future in the JioHotstar interview, Rohit said: "The thought will never cross my mind that the business I had is finished. As long as you're playing, there is always something to look forward to. And I'm looking forward to the World Cup, looking at what lies ahead for me," said Rohit.
Rohit captained India at the 2023 World Cup in India and led the team to the final. The article notes he altered his batting approach in that tournament, adopting a more selfless style and often attacking bowlers early.
On preparing for major events, Rohit said: "When the World Cup is played, when we play an ICC tournament, it has its own unique challenge, because you face different opponents, you play at different venues. Following the BCCI's recent review meeting, secretary Devajit Saikia publicly backed Rohit, highlighting the veteran opener's recent contributions and casting doubt on speculation about his place in India’s plans. Those statements followed media reports raising questions about Rohit's long-term future in the ODI side and possible leadership changes ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
India will face the West Indies in the first ODI on Sunday, September 27.
