Rohit Sharma second-fastest to 12,000 ODI runs, surpasses Tendulkar

Rohit Sharma became the second-fastest batter to reach 12,000 One-Day International runs during the second ODI against West Indies in Guwahati, achieving the milestone in 282 innings with only Virat Kohli having done it quicker.
Rohit entered the match 73 runs shy of 12,000 after scoring 32 off 35 balls in the first ODI at Thiruvananthapuram, and responded at Barsapara Stadium with an aggressive innings that reached 80 off 56 while he and India captain Shubman Gill put together a large opening stand as India chased 406 following West Indies' 405/7.
The landmark moved Rohit past Sachin Tendulkar’s previous mark of 300 innings to reach 12,000; Kohli remains the fastest to the mark at 242 innings, while Ricky Ponting and Kumar Sangakkara complete the top five on the list of batters who got there in the fewest innings.
Rohit is now only the third Indian to accumulate 12,000 ODI runs, joining Tendulkar and Kohli in that group; Kohli himself had reached 15,000 ODI runs in the first match of this series, becoming only the second batter after Tendulkar to cross that total while scoring an unbeaten 139 against West Indies.
The Guwahati performance followed Rohit’s modest series start — he was dismissed for 32 in Thiruvananthapuram — and saw him adopt a more attacking approach, reaching his fifty from 38 balls before progressing to a substantial score; prior to this game he had made 411 runs in 10 ODIs in 2026 at an average of 41.10, including a 138 against England at Lord's.
Rohit’s milestone arrives while he sits fourth in the ICC ODI batting rankings; the latest update lists Shubman Gill at No.1 with 816 points, Virat Kohli second on 796, Daryl Mitchell third on 794 and Rohit on 753, and comes amid his continued contributions after his Test and T20I retirements with the 2027 ODI World Cup as the wider context for India’s ODI campaign.
With India requiring 406 to achieve the highest successful ODI chase in their history, Rohit’s partnership with Gill provided the platform for that pursuit, and another substantial innings from him would be significant as India build towards the 2027 World Cup.
