Ronald Araujo arrives in Liverpool on season-long loan from Barcelona
On 10 August 2026, Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo arrived in Liverpool after signing a season-long loan with the Premier League club. The move gives Liverpool an experienced defensive option and offers Araujo a fresh start away from Barcelona.
New Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola approved the transfer last week and spoke to Araujo by phone before the Uruguay international travelled to England. Araujo has agreed to a pay cut for the coming season and Liverpool will pay his salary for the duration of the loan. The deal was structured to address an immediate need rather than represent a long-term commitment.
Liverpool sought a defender capable of playing both at centre-back and right-back; Araujo's versatility, physical profile and pace matched that brief. The club's defensive resources are currently depleted: Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni are injured, Jeremy Jacquet has yet to feature in pre-season, and with Ibrahima Konate having left in the summer, Virgil van Dijk is the only fit senior centre-back.
Liverpool nevertheless view several younger centre-backs as part of their future: Jeremy Jacquet, Giovanni Leoni, Mor Talla Ndiaye and Ifeanyi Ndukwe were noted as emerging options. In the short term, Araujo was seen as a player able to help bridge the gap; his leadership qualities were also cited. He will take the number 33 shirt at Anfield.
Araujo joined Barcelona from Boston River in 2018, made his first-team debut the following October and has gone on to make 213 first-team appearances for the Catalan club. At 6ft 4in (1.93m) his acceleration and frame allowed Barcelona to defend a high line and provided a strong aerial presence. He finished last season as captain, making 38 appearances for Hansi Flick's side in the 2025-26 campaign.
Flick addressed the transfer and Araujo's recent form in a press conference: "He is a very good person and an exceptional player, but our style of play is slightly different," Flick said. "He is a footballer with great speed and power, and he is good with the ball at his feet, too. I wanted to get him involved; I think he is eager to try new things, and I believe he has also been affected by what happened in the past. I said goodbye to him this morning and saw that he was happy. Liverpool is a great club, and I wish him the best. You have to accept it."
Araujo's Barcelona career included moments that drew intense scrutiny: his red card against Paris St-Germain in the 2024 Champions League quarter-final, critical errors in the second leg of the 2025 Champions League semi-final against Inter, and a sending-off in Barcelona's 3-0 Champions League defeat by Chelsea last season after a second yellow for a foul on Marc Cucurella. A week after the Chelsea match he was granted a leave of absence to prioritise his mental health, received professional support and treatment, then returned a month later to make 23 appearances across the second half of the season, starting six matches.
Barcelona have been seeking significant sales to ease financial pressures; although the move to Liverpool is a loan, the club will save on Araujo's wages for the season because Liverpool will cover his full salary. The loan contains an option for Liverpool to make the transfer permanent for 55m euros (£47.1m).
