Rubin Colwill scored a late free-kick to secure a 1-1 Championship draw for Cardiff against Wrexham at Cardiff City Stadium on 17 August 2026. The strike arrived in the eighth minute of stoppage time after George Dobson fouled Joel Colwill on the edge of the box, allowing Rubin to curl the set-piece over the wall and past Anthony Patterson.

Colwill’s equaliser cancelled out Kieffer Moore’s third-minute goal, with Moore recording his seventh strike against his former club and his first goal since February, ending an 11-game run without scoring. The result came after a game in which Wrexham outshot Cardiff by 18 attempts to 11 and in which Cardiff’s defensive options were limited by injuries.

Cardiff’s backline had been disrupted by absences to Calum Chambers, Dylan Lawlor and Will Fish, prompting manager to deploy left-back Joel Bagan inside alongside Gabriel Osho. That makeshift central pairing was exposed early, a factor that contributed to Wrexham’s opener.

The opening goal followed a Lewis O’Brien free-kick that Cardiff only managed to clear as far as Danny Imray; his long ball then caught the hosts flat-footed. Osho played Moore onside and the striker ran beyond Bagan to rifle the ball over Nathan Trott into the net; Trott later tipped over a header from Callum Doyle as Cardiff struggled to cope with the early stages.

Cardiff improved during a sustained spell midway through the first half after Zak Vyner’s back pass was short and Patterson reacted quickly to beat Yousef Salech to the loose ball. Jack Moylan lifted an effort over, Patterson saved from Cian Ashford following slick passing, and Wrexham went close when Moore rose to head against the crossbar; Imray’s scuffed attempt also forced a save from Trott despite appearing to be heading wide.

After the interval Cardiff again left spaces in the restart sequence when Ollie Rathbone’s pass found Doyle and Trott produced a near-post save, then denied Nathan Broadhead and saw Doyle’s rasping drive rebound off the post. Cardiff introduced the Colwill brothers shortly after the hour, Moylan had a deflected effort drift wide and Dominic Hyam headed against his own crossbar as the hosts pushed for a leveller.

The 1-1 draw denied Wrexham their first victory in the Welsh capital since 1992 and left both sides sharing the points, with Wrexham finishing the match having had 18 goal attempts to Cardiff’s 11.
