Rybakina retires in Cincinnati quarterfinal, ends challenge to Sabalenka’s No. 1 spot

Elena Rybakina retired from her quarterfinal match at the Cincinnati Open on August 21, 2026, ending her bid to dethrone Aryna Sabalenka for the world number one ranking.

Sabalenka will retain the top position in the rankings as a result of Rybakina's withdrawal.

Iga Swiatek advanced to the semifinals following the retirement, and Rybakina is awaiting an MRI to evaluate her condition ahead of the US Open.
