Born in Indore, Jain made his first-class debut for Madhya Pradesh in the 2014-15 season and developed steadily as a red-ball cricketer while remaining outside the national spotlight for several years. His progression in the domestic circuit was gradual rather than immediate, culminating in performances that drew selector attention.
Before his India debut, Jain had played 54 first-class matches, scoring 2,233 runs and taking 188 wickets. He averaged 31.75 with the bat, had two first-class centuries to his name, batted left-handed and bowled right-arm off-spin, a combination the source describes as making him a genuine all-round option rather than a specialist bowler.
Jain’s 2025-26 Ranji Trophy campaign produced 518 runs at an average of 57.55, including a century and multiple half-centuries, while he also claimed 30 wickets at an average of 20.43 with the ball. Selection timing reflected both squad availability and Jain’s recent form: he was named in place of Washington Sundar, who was unavailable for the Sri Lanka series, and his India A performances on the Sri Lanka tour — a six-wicket haul and an unbeaten 70 — provided additional impetus. When Kuldeep Yadav was ruled out with a viral illness ahead of the Colombo Test and failed to recover for the second Test, Jain was brought into the playing XI.
He has not played in the IPL. Veteran Ravindra Jadeja presented Jain with his first India cap during the second Test in Colombo, confirming his entry into India’s Test ranks.
