Satwik, Chirag face testing route to Asian Games gold in Aichi-Nagoya
Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will begin their defence of the Asian Games men’s doubles title in Aichi-Nagoya on Friday at Asian Games 2026. The reigning champions, currently ranked World No. 5, have been handed a draw that includes several leading pairs.
The duo won the men’s doubles gold in Hangzhou in 2023 and arrive in Aichi-Nagoya aiming to retain that title. The draw has presented a challenging pathway, with multiple high-quality opponents potentially standing between them and another gold medal. The projected itinerary outlines likely opponents from the opening round through to a possible final.
Satwik-Chirag open their campaign against Thailand’s Peeratchai Sukphun and Pakkapon Teeratsakul, who are currently ranked world No. 36. The Indians lead the head-to-head 2-0, though both prior meetings went the distance and the pairs have not met in 2026. The Thai combination reached the event in good form after defeating a world No. 15 pairing in the team competition, meaning Satwik and Chirag will need to be sharp from the outset.
A potential round-of-16 meeting would pit the Indians against Indonesia’s Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin, who sit at world No. 32. Satwik-Chirag have won four of their five meetings with the Indonesians, but their most recent encounter ended in defeat when Carnando and Marthin beat them in the Thailand Open final in May. That result is likely to bolster the Indonesians while the Indians will seek to avenge that loss to reach the quarter-finals.
The projected quarter-final opponent is Vietnam’s Nguyen Dinh Hoang and Tran Dinh Manh, a pairing ranked 107th in the world. The Vietnamese are not an established combination at the same level as the other potential opponents in Satwik-Chirag’s half of the draw, and on paper this should be a more comfortable quarter-final for the Indians.
A semi-final could bring a clash with world No. 1 Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae of South Korea, who lead the head-to-head 2-1. Satwik and Chirag won their most recent meeting in the semi-finals of the Singapore Open, but Kim and Seo’s ranking and consistency make them a formidable obstacle.
The final could feature either Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri or China’s Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang. Satwik-Chirag’s record against the Indonesians is tied at 2-2, with the Indians winning the latest meeting in a three-game Singapore Open final; against Liang and Wang the Chinese lead 10-5, although Satwik and Chirag won their most recent encounter in straight games in the Asian Games team event. The route to gold is therefore not simple.
