Savinho will be registered as Savio after completing Tottenham transfer

Brazilian winger Savinho announced he will be known as Savio after sealing a permanent transfer to Tottenham Hotspur from Manchester City, with the club revealing his No. 17 shirt during his presentation on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old was born in São Mateus, Espírito Santo, and his full name is Savio Moreira de Oliveira. He spent two years at Manchester City, where he was known as ‘Savinho’ and had that name printed on the back of his No. 28 jersey. Before joining City he was known as Savio during loan spells at PSV and Girona, where he became popular in LaLiga.

Explaining the change, the player said in an interview in July 2024: “(My name change) is because in the national team, (during) the first call-up they put Savinho on the shirt,” and added: “People in Girona knew me more as Savinho; it was just written Savio on the shirt, you know? So I told (City) to put Savinho on the shirt, and I hope it brings me luck too, this name Savinho.”

He struggled for regular starts at Manchester City, managing seven goals across all competitions in 84 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side and falling down the pecking order.

The player has requested to be referred to as Sávio going forward, and the club confirmed that spelling will appear on the back of his No. 17 shirt. Tottenham revealed the No. 17 kit at his official presentation on Tuesday.

The move returns him to the shorter name he used during his spells in the Netherlands and Spain, after Manchester City printed Savinho on his shirt when he joined them.

Savio could make his Tottenham debut in the Carabao Cup 2026-27 match against Charlton Athletic.
