Sawan Barwal won the silver medal in the marathon at the Asian Games on September 30, 2026. The Army athlete recorded a time of 2:11:37.

Barwal is a 28-year-old from Himachal Pradesh who described the result as the culmination of years of hard work, training and sacrifices. He became the first Indian to win a silver medal in the Asian Games marathon since 1982. Hosur Kukkappa Seetharan won the marathon bronze at the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi.

Barwal said, "Winning a medal for India at the Asian Games is a very special moment for me. There have been many years of hard work, training and sacrifices behind this result, and I am happy that it has come together on such a big stage."

Barwal also acknowledged the assistance he received while preparing, saying, "The support I received during my preparation, including from organisations such as NMDC and NMDC Hyderabad Marathon organisers Hyderabad Runners Society, gave me encouragement at important stages of my journey," Barwal said.

Barwal had received support from NMDC during his preparatory phase. The company has been promoting sporting talent through individual sponsorships and other initiatives across disciplines including kabaddi, boxing, cricket and football.

He said the medal motivates him to work harder and aim for bigger achievements for the country. He repeated his gratitude for the backing from organisations such as NMDC and Hyderabad Runners Society as part of that preparation.
