Sawan Barwal takes silver in men's marathon at Asian Games, sets national record
Sawan Barwal won the silver medal in the men's marathon at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, clocking a national record and personal best of 2:11:37, the report said. Barwal's result ended a 44-year wait for India in the Asian Games marathon, the country's first medal in the event since Hosur Kukkappa Seetharan's bronze at the 1982 Asiad.
India's contingent continued to compete across multiple sports on Day 7 of the Aichi-Nagoya Games, with medal opportunities in team and field events. Both the men's and women's kabaddi teams were scheduled to face Iran in their respective finals, while Tajinderpal Singh Toor was listed for the men's shot put final and Praveen Chitravel for the men's triple jump final.
In table tennis, Yashaswini Ghorpade's campaign ended after she went down 1-4 (9-11, 5-11, 11-4, 4-11, 5-11) to Japan's world No. 3 Miwa Harimoto; Yashaswini managed to fight back by taking the third game, but Harimoto closed out the contest in four games to seal her progress. Yashaswini's exit left Manush Shah as the only Indian paddler remaining across the categories.
Lakshya Sen was eliminated from badminton after losing the deciding game 14-21 to Singapore's Loh Kean Yew. Sen had lost the first game 12-21, then recovered to take the second 21-15 before dropping the decider; the result followed the earlier first-round exit of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty.
Tejaswin Shankar failed to improve on his long jump mark in the decathlon, finishing his event with an X on the final attempt after opening with a 7.39m effort worth 908 points; his personal best of 7.82m was noted as set at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games earlier this year. N Thowfeeq recorded a personal best of 7.37m on his final jump, worth 904 points. Gulveer Singh secured the silver in the men's 10,000m, clocking 28:29.38 to finish 1.87 seconds behind gold medallist Birhanu Balew of Bahrain and improving on the bronze he won in the same event at the 2023 Hangzhou Games.
Manush Shah, the sole remaining Indian table tennis player, was scheduled to face China's Lin Shidong in the men's singles round of 16 at 8:45 am IST, while India's teams and athletes across shooting, kabaddi, table tennis, athletics and squash continued to feature on the Day 7 programme of the Asian Games.
