Scott McTominay to have corrective heart procedure after Napoli diagnosis

Scott McTominay will undergo heart surgery after Napoli said on Tuesday the Scotland international had been diagnosed with a mild, benign cardiac arrhythmia.

In an official club statement Napoli said: “Following the onset of a mild benign arrhythmia, Scott McTominay will undergo corrective surgery using a cardiac arrhythmia ablation (PFA) in the coming days,” the statement read. “He will be available again after the international break.” The club added the condition is not considered serious and that the procedure is not expected to affect his football career.

The statement described the planned treatment as a cardiac ablation using PFA, a minimally invasive procedure used to treat abnormal heart rhythms.

Before the diagnosis McTominay featured in Napoli’s 2-1 home defeat to Como, and head coach Massimiliano Allegri said the midfielder had been training on a limited basis because of blisters. “McTominay had some problems with blisters, so he’s been training on a limited basis,” Allegri said. “Hopefully, we can get him into the best possible condition as soon as possible.”

Napoli noted McTominay moved from Manchester United and has since become an important player for the club; his performances in the 2024-25 season saw him voted the league’s MVP and he was nominated for the Ballon d’Or.

The club record cited in the statement lists McTominay with 27 goals in 82 appearances for Napoli.

Napoli indicated he will likely miss the next four matches before the international break, specifically the away game against Inter Milan, the UEFA Champions League home fixture against Arsenal, the home match with Bologna and the away trip to Fiorentina.

Napoli are currently 10th in the Serie A table, having won one of their two matches, and sit three points behind defending champions Inter Milan.
