Scottie Scheffler wins second Fedex Cup at Tour Championship in Atlanta

World number one Scottie Scheffler claimed his second Fedex Cup title at the PGA Tour's season-ending Tour Championship in Atlanta on Sunday, finishing at 16 under par to win by three strokes.

Scheffler began the final day three strokes behind overnight leader Viktor Hovland and converted the opportunity into his 22nd career victory on the PGA Tour; the win earns him $10m (£7.4m). The 2024 champion joins Tiger Woods (2007 and 2009) and Rory McIlroy (2016, 2019 and 2022) as the only players to have won the event more than once.

Across the final three pairings Scheffler produced the tournament's strongest closing round, carding a four-under 66 that was the only round to break par among those groups and repeatedly finding greens to build a decisive lead.

Hovland, who had led overnight, saw his driving grow erratic and his putting cool at a critical time, signing for a two-over 72 and finishing three strokes behind the champion.

American debutant Ryan Gerard, who started one behind Hovland, also recorded a 72 and closed in third place on 12 under.

Rory McIlroy posted a 69 that contained four birdies and an eagle but was offset by five bogeys, leaving him level with Alex Fitzpatrick on 11 under; Fitzpatrick matched Scheffler's 66, the lowest round of the day, to move into a tie for fourth on his Tour Championship debut. Justin Rose produced a hole-in-one at the ninth but finished the event at seven under overall.
