Scottish FA identifies preferred candidate in search to replace Steve Clarke

The Scottish Football Association has identified a preferred candidate to become Scotland’s next head coach in the search to replace Steve Clarke, and hopes to complete the appointment within two weeks, the SFA said on 8 August 2026. The association intends for the new coach to be in place ahead of Scotland’s opening Nations League triple-header.

Clarke had signed a new four-year deal in May but resigned after Scotland’s group-stage exit at the World Cup this summer, bringing his seven-year spell in charge to an end. His departure prompted the SFA to open a formal search for a successor to lead the national team.

Craig Mulholland, who was appointed as the SFA’s chief football officer in May, is leading the recruitment process. Mulholland has held discussions with a wide range of candidates from the UK and beyond, and interviews have already taken place as the association narrows its options.

It remains unclear whether the incoming head coach will be Scottish or foreign. Steven Naismith, who served as Clarke’s assistant, said last month he expects to continue in the national team set-up under a new boss.

The SFA is targeting a swift conclusion to the process so the new manager can prepare for the Nations League campaign; Scotland’s triple-header begins with an away game against Slovenia on 26 September. Securing an appointment within the stated two-week window would allow the new coach to assume responsibility before that fixture.
