Seare edges Ingebrigtsen to 5km road gold in Copenhagen

Jakob Ingebrigtsen was overtaken by Dawit Seare in the final stages of the men's 5km at the World Road Running Championships in Copenhagen on 19 September 2026. Seare took gold in 12 minutes and 56 seconds, with Saymon Amanuel finishing third to claim bronze.

Ingebrigtsen, 26, was competing in only his sixth race of an injury-hit season and had won the 5,000m on the track at the Ultimate Athletics Championships in Budapest eight days earlier. The Olympic 5,000m champion looked well out of contention until roughly the final kilometre before powering through to lead briefly.

African 5,000m champion Dawit Seare produced a late surge to catch and pass Ingebrigtsen in the dying stages and secure the title for Eritrea. Seare’s finishing kick proved decisive after Ingebrigtsen had moved to the front inside the closing kilometre.

Likina Amebaw of Ethiopia dominated the women's 5km, making an early break and winning in 14:41. Amebaw’s victory came six days after she collected $150,000 (£112,000) for winning the 5,000m in Budapest; Caroline Gitonga of Kenya was seven seconds behind in second and Rose Davies of Australia took bronze, while Britain’s Hannah Nuttall placed 10th in 15:08.

Robert Farken of Germany provided a surprise in the men's mile when he overtook American Yared Nuguse, who had led from the gun, in the final 100m to win in 3:51.80 for his first major title. Jake Heyward of Britain finished 11th in a personal-best road time of 3:55.76.

Agathe Guillemot of France won the women's mile in 4:22.74, the fastest road mile time in the world this year, timing her attack to beat Freweyni Hailu of Ethiopia. Kenyan Mirriam Cherop finished third and Britain’s Katie Snowden was 16th.

The half-marathon titles will be decided on Sunday, with the elite races forming part of a two-day festival of running in the Danish capital.
