Seren Lockwood ruled out of Wales' WXV Global Series fixture against USA after failed HIA

Seren Lockwood has been ruled out of Wales' second WXV Global Series fixture, against USA in Cardiff on Saturday, after failing a head injury assessment. Lockwood was also recently named Wales women's young player of the year by the Welsh Rugby Writers' Association.

Lockwood was withdrawn during the first half of Wales' eight-try victory over South Africa and is now undergoing World Rugby's return to play protocols. She and Keira Bevan had formed a promising half-back partnership in a reconfigured backline. Her absence requires an adjustment to Wales' backline for the Cardiff match.

"It's always sad to see an individual coming off, but the HIA is great to have on board, we're looking after her," said Wales head coach Sean Lynn. "She's not going to be available this weekend, but I'm super excited to see the half-back combination that we've got this week."

Lleucu George will return at 10 for the game at Cardiff Arms Park, with Keira Bevan reverting to her usual position of nine.

Carys Cox has returned to fitness after summer knee surgery and offers Lynn an option in the backline, able to play at centre and on the wing. "Carys has been superb in rehab, she feels fitter, faster and stronger," said Lynn. "She always brings a smile, she's always confident and I love her athleticism. She will always beat that first defender and the way we are playing now, she's going to get some ball in hand."

Saturday's fixture comes too soon for fellow back Nel Metcalfe, who will not be ready until next month's two-Test tour of Japan. "Nel is progressing really well with her rehab, we saw her today in some rugby elements, so fingers crossed we will be seeing her in Japan," Lynn added.

The match kicks off on Saturday, 26 September at 15:00 BST at Cardiff Arms Park and will be broadcast live on BBC One, iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app, with live text coverage. Lockwood remains unavailable for selection for that fixture while she completes the return to play protocols.
