Benjamin Sesko and Matthijs de Ligt returned to training at Carrington on Tuesday as Manchester United prepared for their opening Premier League match against Hull City on the 22nd.

Sesko had missed all of United’s pre-season fixtures after sustaining an injury during the triumph against Liverpool on May 3, but he practised at Carrington on Tuesday morning as the squad readied for the opening-day game. The centre-forward is projected to be United’s primary striker this season, assuming he is available.

In Sesko’s absence during pre-season, Bryan Mbeumo led United’s attacking line, scoring a brace in a 2-1 win against Atletico Madrid and an equaliser in the tie with Paris Saint-Germain. Joshua Zirkzee and Matheus Cunha also featured at centre-forward while Michael Carrick considered his options up front.

De Ligt, who has been out with a long-term issue, was also included in the training squad after being spotted undertaking workouts at Carrington last week. The Dutch international last featured for United in a 2-1 win against Crystal Palace last year and is working on his recuperation ahead of a comeback to the club.

The centre-back was initially diagnosed with a minor back issue that ruled him out for the remainder of that campaign, and he underwent surgery at the end of last season to correct the problem. His return to training will give Carrick more options at the back ahead of the new season.

Mason Mount was again absent from training; Mount, like Andrey Santos, had impressed in the early weeks of pre-season before suffering an injury in the 1-1 tie with Paris Saint-Germain.

Both Sesko and de Ligt’s reappearances in training came as Manchester United prepare for their opening Premier League fixture on the 22nd against Hull City, with the club set to assess squad availability ahead of that match.
