Shafali Verma receives reprimand and demerit point for breach in 2nd T20I vs Zimbabwe

India opener Shafali Verma was officially reprimanded and handed one demerit point for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the second Women's T20I against Zimbabwe in Raipur on Sunday, October 18. The sanction followed an incident in which she threw the ball to the ground in frustration after a dropped catch.
The incident occurred in the 12th over when Shafali dropped Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano at mid-off off the bowling of Sree Charani, and her reaction was judged a Level 1 breach of Article 2.2, which covers abuse of cricket equipment, clothing or ground equipment. Shafali admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by G.S. Lakshmi of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees, so no formal hearing was required. The demerit point was her first disciplinary offence in a 24-month period. Under the ICC disciplinary framework, Level 1 breaches carry at least an official reprimand, can attract a fine of up to 50 percent of a player's match fee and one or two demerit points, and four or more demerit points within 24 months are converted into suspension points.
With the disciplinary matter concluded, Shafali played a decisive role with the bat in the same match, scoring an unbeaten 55 off 25 deliveries. Her innings included a sequence of boundaries and sixes as she took the attack to the Zimbabwe bowlers and helped India secure the match result that clinched the series.
She and captain Smriti Mandhana built a 96-run opening stand; Mandhana remained unbeaten on 47 off 25 balls. That partnership set the platform for a rapid chase after India had earlier restricted Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe were held to 102 for 8 before India reached the target in 8.5 overs, earning a nine-wicket win. The margin reflected the dominance of India’s opening pair in the chase.
In contrast, Shafali had managed just four runs in the series opener, when Zimbabwe spinner Nyasha Gwanzura troubled the Indian top order and reduced the hosts to 19 for 4. The second-game performance therefore reversed her fortunes from the first match.
The victory gave India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series; with the series already secured India will aim for a 3-0 sweep in the third T20I on Tuesday in Raipur.
